A Doctor's Care

Updated: Apr 30, 2019

From time immemorial the art of practice of medicine focuses around empathy and compassion along with scientific progresses and achieved remarkable heights of progresses and continues to do so till to date. What has been at the epicenter is a Doctor's heart which was the same then and now and it strives for the welfare of humanity as a whole. That faithful doctor believes till today on the dictum that: "I treat, He cures"

It is a well known fact that doctors dislike the idea of their own children following the profession. Why? A never ending change from a 'normal life', the constant struggles, the inability to spend time at leisure activities, the unexpected calls, the inability to get more 'tired' etc etc. Yet this profession is one of dignity, one of perseverance, one of never letting it go, one of constant happiness for others.

A Doctor's Care fights with challenges depending on the situation and the disease itself, facing a person's state of being and that of his family. It focuses on respect to privacy and non judgemental practices as Doctors follow the Hippocratic Oath. Here is that Modern Oath that all Doctor's proclaim on Graduation Day.

I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:

I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.

I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin traps of over treatment and therapeutic nihilism.

I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.

I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery.

I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.

I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.

I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.

I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.

If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.

The care offered by a Doctor involve not only Treatment of the diseases and their preventions, but also cares for avoidance of Side Effects of the drugs as well. A dictum followed in Doctor's practice is "A good doctor treats the disease, the best doctor treats the patients with the disease".

Knowledge of drugs, their interactions with the body, and the resultant abatement of all agonies of the patient, including their mental health - all are the healer"s aim in practice. Benefits of treatments with control of disease activity are sought with great optimism in Doctor's mind before offering treatment.

Even though the Doctor knows how to go about treating an illness, ultimately the acceptance and appreciation

comes from the patient himself. Furthermore, a person is discouraged from following ill-advised and scientifically unsubstantiated, illogical treatments circulated in social media.

Doctors do face hurdles in treating certain situations:

  1. A fairly common occurrence, is finding a cure for certain illness, the same drugs end up being personally chosen by the patient on the basis of identical complaints. For example, a headache or fever is only a manifestation which can be a symptom of several disorders. Fever or headache are not illnesses but a feature of illnesses. The diagnosis can vary as at times serious diseases like Intracranial bleed can go undiagnosed till late or a fever due to pyelonephritis or kidney infection can get messed up. So is the fact with various skin disorders; wrong medication applied externally or taken by mouth can invite serious harm and make grossly change the features pointing to a diagnosis.

  2. To ensure proper cure, the Doctor may propose a maintenance regime. If that may be ignored out of neglect or fear and patient stops on his own, problems such as recurrence, resistance and unusual changes in presentations can ensue.

  3. A more incomprehensible situation is when the Doctor correctly considers urgency of treatment and patient fails to accept the urgency. Many such responsibilities has to be born by the patient himself.
